International Protection
Under the Madrid Protocol, a single trade mark application can be made to obtain international protection for your brand in over 170 signatory countries. These countries include the UK, EU, Australia and the USA and will give you global trade mark protection. South Africa is not a member of the Madrid Protocol and a separate trade mark registration therefore needs to be taken out for South Africa.
Because of the costs involved, the single Madrid Protocol trade mark application should only be considered if you are planning to reach a global market with your products or services, or if you want to operate a global website.
In other circumstances, country by country trade mark applications may be more appropriate and cost effective. We will be pleased to advise you of your best options and quote for your specific country requirements upon request.
